Nina Buscombe Awards

29th Annual Nina Buscombe Awards 2025

The “Nina’s” celebrate the contribution and commitment demonstrated by Nina Buscombe to improve services, management and research for people with motor neurone disease through travel, training and conference attendance. The Award is presented and administered by MND Victoria and is intended to fund attendance at training, conferences or seminars within Australia or overseas.


In 2025, we have allocated funds for the following awards:

16 awards of $300 for Victorian applicants

to attend PACTALS/MND Australia Care forum – 7-9th September

10 awards of $1000 for interstate applicants

to attend PACTALS/MND Australia Care forum – 7-9th September

Awards are made to individuals. Award funds will be used to assist with the cost of travel, accommodation and registration.
Awards will not exceed the cost of attendance. The Award comprises a letter and a payment.

Eligibility

  1. All people with an interest in motor neurone disease may apply. 
  2. Priority will be given to:
    • Health and allied health professionals working with people living with MND, including palliative care
    • Final year PhD students and early post doc researcher
Additional eligibility criteria:
  1. Applicant has not received an award of over $200 in the previous financial year
  2. Applicant has provided a report on conferences attended with any previous Nina Buscombe award
  3. Applicant is prepared to present at one or more events involving plwMND, Allied Health professionals, researchers – organised by MND Victoria
  4. A report on the conference attended, learnings and how these will be applied is required within 8 weeks of attendance at conference.

Employees of Australian MND associations are not eligible to apply.

Basis of Selection

  1. Applicants must use the template below to submit their application.
  2. Applicants must support their application with a statement outlining how attendance at the event might impact on people living with MND.
  3. Application must include a budget– no attachments or publication lists.
  4. Applicants must identify other sources of funding attained or sought.
  5. Recipients of MNDRA Awards or Grants for 2024 that include funding to attend the International Symposium must declare the MNDRA funding.
  6. Awards may be awarded, or not awarded, at the discretion of the Association.

Application of Funds

The Award may be used to subsidise travel, attendance fees, or other costs associated with attendance. Funding may not meet all costs.

Report

A requirement to present to the Association a written report within 8 weeks of the conclusion of the event is part of the Award agreement. The report will address the nature of the event, specific learning, impact on people with MND, take home knowledge and promotion/translation to practice. Recipients who do not submit a report will be ineligible to receive future support.

Must be sent by email to ninabuscombe@mnd.org.au. Applications received by mail or fax will not be considered and not returned. No late applications will be considered. Early applications appreciated.
